Dubai, UAE – 23rd April, 2018: The ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress kicks off today at Dubai World Trade Center, Dubai. Hosted by the Society of Engineers UAE in collaboration with the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), under the theme “The Role of Underground Space in Future Sustainable Cities”, the conference will address the developments, discuss ongoing global projects and innovations in the tunnelling and underground space industry.
The opening ceremony was well attended by VIP guests, delegates from government and private sectors, presidents of international engineering associations, representatives from major engineering and tunnelling companies, as well as key stakeholders in tunnelling industry from all over the world. Inaugurated by Eng. Dawoud Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality and President of the Society of Engineers cited on this occasion: “The United Arab of Emirates has always been a pioneer of development in the region, especially in the field of tunnels and the use of underground space, with a number of ongoing mega-projects. We are honoured to be the first country in the Middle East to host the World Tunnel Congress. We welcome all the academics and the specialists in the field, who will be sharing their knowledge to upgrade the engineering sector in the UAE, and the tunnel sector in particular.”
Prof. Tarcisio Celestino, the President of International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) stated “It is significant that the WTC is organized for the first time in the Middle East. The survey of the global underground construction market released by ITA in the last General Assembly in Bergen shows that for the first time the Middle East appears as a significant and important market. No doubt, we have much to learn from the region in terms of engineering solutions adopted for their particular problems and they have also to learn about recent developments which may be useful for their problems.”
The World Tunnel Congress (WTC) is the foremost international conference on tunnelling and underground space where participants gather and share information to improve the industry. Each year, ITA holds its General Assembly meeting and the WTC in a different Member Nation around the world. This year’s annual meeting will be a six-day knowledge-sharing event and showcase scientific advances within the tunneling and underground industry.
