Not only tunnelling: innovation, archaeology, architecture and art, these will be the topics of the congress in Naples
Rome, April the 23rd 2018. The World Tunnelling Conference will be held in Naples from 3rd to 9th of May 2019. A key event for the engineering and geotechnical sectors linked to tunnelling, promoted by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES) and Società Italiana Gallerie (SIG).
Meanwhile, from 21st to 26th of April, WTC 2018 is taking place in Dubai where a number of Italian representatives will be also presenting the main topics introduced in the Naples edition, including the events’ programme for the 7 days congress, based in the exhibition fair centre Mostra d’Oltremare.
WTC Naples 2019 will host conferences, seminars and workshops related to the world of underground design and constructions, with a focus on engineering and innovation. The inclusion of themes suggested by the city of Naples and its context, and more generally the Italian background, will characterize this edition, giving a distinctive and unique perspective. In particular, we refer to the wealth of the historical heritage, the ability to design and the high concentration of works derived from the combination of genius and creativity.
The metropolitan area of Naples hosts, in fact, many underground structures back-dated to the Ancient Roman Empire, dominating the Mediterranean. At the same time though, the city of Naples is also a place for innovative infrastructures like the so called urban underground “Stations of Arts”, such as the multi-awarded Toledo and Università stations.
These places are an example of the ability to value a space through the synergy and interaction between Art, Archaeology and Architecture, and also represent a model for innovative solutions accomplished during excavation works. Considering all of this, WTC 2019 has come to the decision to plan some sessions dedicated to the “Triple A”.
In the setting of WTC 2019 edition, the organizing committee wishes to catch the interest of a scientific community which will be able to explore and highlight specific topics around tunnelling, and about the development of subterranean infrastructures, in close relation with complementary disciplines able to dialogue to each other.
It will be possible, until May the 15th of 2018, to submit abstracts covering one or more topics of the 2019 edition and having the chance to be selected as a speaker for the WTC in Naples.
Purpose of the call for abstract is to raise interest and engage the national and international researchers, even the youngest, in order to delve into unpublished themes and suggest innovative contents which could offer the broadest and most diversified overview, emphasizing the debate around the city and its infrastructures.
The WTC 2019 scientific committee, formed by 99 experts coming from all over the world, will be chaired by Professor Daniele Peila of Polytechnic University of Turin, Professor Giulia Viggiani of the Geotechnics Department of the Tor Vergata University in Rome and Department of Engineering of the University of Cambridge, and Professor Tarcisio Celestino, President of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association and Professor at the Universidade de São Paulo in Brasil.
Professors, Academics, Researchers are invited to submit their application highlighting projects, best practices and construction sites with innovative solutions that are able to combine engineering or geotechnics with art, architecture, archaeology. Submitting the application will give a chance to be selected and introduced to the large and prestigious community of the WTC 2019 Naples Congress.
The submissions will be evaluated by a dedicated expert commission inside the scientific committee. The outcomes of the selection will be announced within June the 20th of 2018.
Call for abstract deadline – 15th May, 2018 Announcement of the selected speakers – 20th June 2018
